IBM world's first 10-terabyte performance benchmark IBM eServer IBM disk storage systems

IBM announced the world's first 10-terabyte performance benchmark for business intelligence applications using IBM's DB2 database software running on a cluster of IBM eServer and IBM disk storage systems.

Based on the data warehouse industry standard TPC-H benchmark, IBM set the worldwide record, delivering a 10-terabyte business intelligence performance benchmark. Ten terabytes of data is equal to the size of the entire printed collection of the U.S. Library of Congress, or three billion pages of single-spaced text, which laid end-to-end, would encircle the earth 20 times.

According to Winter Corporation, large data warehouses are projected to grow 169 percent by 2004. According to the firm, based on a recent survey of companies with large databases, the number of data warehouses containing at least 10 terabytes of data is expected to quintuple over the next two years. Other analysts believe that by 2004, enterprises will need to process 30 times as much data as they handled three years ago. With these benchmark results, IBM demonstrates DB2 combined with the pSeries eServer and storage has the ability to keep up with this growth, providing rapid response for complex query workloads on a very large scale.

The TPC-H benchmark result was achieved with five IBM eServer p690 systems with 32 POWER4 microprocessors each, 89.9-terabytes of IBM TotalStorage disk systems and IBM's DB2 database version 8.1. The result signals a new milestone in enterprise data warehousing and demonstrates the extreme scalability and speed of a p690 cluster and TotalStorage systems running with DB2.

TPC-H measures the performance of decision support systems to examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions. The test is a standard benchmark defined by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), an industry group whose members include most of the largest computer system and database companies worldwide.

The IBM solution produced a TPC-H result at the 10TB database size of 62,214.7 phH@10000GB with a price/performance, $266/QphH@10000GB on a cluster of five p690's running AIX 5L V5.2 with DB2 UDB 8.1. In recent years, IBM's DB2 has demonstrated outstanding benchmark results, using the TPC-H benchmark definition at database scale factors of 100GB, 300GB, 1TB, 3TB, and now 10TB.
