AMD Notebook PC: new mobile processors thin-and-light high-performance notebooks
At CeBIT AMD boosted competition in the notebook PC industry by introducing 12 new mobile processors for thin-and-light and high-performance notebooks. AMD partnered with leading notebook manufacturers such as EPSON DIRECT, Fujitsu Siemens Computers Consumer Division and Sharp Corporation to deliver on-the-go productivity and extended battery life for virtually all major notebook categories.
“AMD continues to bring competition to the PC marketplace while helping OEMs differentiate their mobile solutions and provide their customers with a choice of outstanding notebooks,” said Rob Herb, executive vice president and chief sales and marketing officer for AMD. “Today’s announcement means that notebook PC manufacturers can select from a wide array of mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processors, combining them with a variety of best-in-class wireless and chipset solutions to meet the needs of both business and home consumers.”
Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processors are designed with an open architecture, helping to ensure that the best available 802.11 wireless solutions from leading companies can be easily integrated into AMD processor-based mobile systems. OEMs can choose any wireless solution, including 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g, to best meet the needs of their customers.
AMD Processors for Thin-and-Light Notebooks AMD is introducing the low-voltage mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processors 1800+, 1700+, 1600+, 1500+ and 1400+ with micro PGA packaging for the thin-and-light notebook market. This marks the first time AMD mobile processors will be featured in thin-and-light notebooks weighing less than four pounds, providing outstanding portability and extended system battery life for end users.
“The thin-and-light market represents the largest and fastest-growing segment of the notebook PC market,” said Matt Sargent, director of research, Personal Computers, ARS. “The ability of manufacturers to customize their mobile solutions and offer a broad range of choices to notebook buyers becomes even more critical as small-business and home consumers join enterprises in the quest for portability and connectivity.”
AMD Processors for Full-Size Notebooks AMD is also introducing new mobile processors designed for end users who require high performance and extended system battery life in a full-size notebook. Featuring 640KB of full-speed, on-chip cache, the mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 2500+ outperforms competitive mobile PC processors by up to eight percent on a variety of industry-standard benchmarks.
AMD is now offering the AMD Athlon XP-M processors 2600+, 2500+, 2400+, 2200+ and 2000+ to meet the high-performance needs of business and home users. Both the AMD Athlon XP-M processors 2400+ and 2200+ are available in desktop replacement and mainstream notebook form factors.
Industry Support “AVERATEC, Inc. chose AMD’s new mobile processor for our 3150 series of thin-and-light notebooks to expand our market-wide acceptance with a stylish and innovative product,” said Saeed Shahbazi, president, AVERATEC, Inc. “We expect our notebooks, designed for consumers, small offices and education, to be available at leading retail outlets in the United States, Europe and Asia in the second quarter of 2003.”
“Mobile users are continually looking for ways to become more mobile, not just while on the road, but also at work, school or home,” said Toshio Morohoshi, president and chief executive officer, Fujitsu PC Corporation. “Fujitsu designed the LifeBook S2000 notebook with all of the mobile users’ needs in mind. The addition of the AMD processor enables us to offer a high-performance, aggressively priced system with advanced wireless capabilities that provides users with maximum flexibility to stay connected wherever their computing environment may be.”
“Fujitsu Siemens Computers has chosen the new mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 2400+ to power its AMILO A series of consumer notebooks, because it delivers outstanding performance through its larger L2 cache for improved multitasking and faster video and audio playback”, said Peter Esser, executive vice president, Volume Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “The new mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 2400+ allows us to extend our product offering for customers who are looking for excellent performance while conserving battery power.”
“Sharp welcomes the advent of the new low-voltage mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor,” said Makoto Nakamura, division general manager, Mobile Computing Systems Division, Information Systems Group, Sharp Corporation. “We expect that this processor will substantially broaden the range of usage scenarios for personal computing in mobile environments.”
