Digital Cinema systems based on the new AMD Opteron Processor
AMD announced digital cinema systems based on the new AMD Opteron processor are planned to be rolled out nationwide to power digital cinema in Landmark Theatres. The systems, developed by Digital Cinema Solutions (DCS), will use AMD Opteron processors and Windows Media 9 Series to provide movie buffs a high-quality digital presentation in theaters.
AMD processor-based servers and workstations have been used to create and render special effects for movies including Men in Black II, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. With AMD Opteron processor-based digital playback systems, AMD technologies can now be used in complete end-to-end digital video production and exhibition.
AMD Opteron processors, which natively support both 32- and 64-bit applications for servers and workstations, can enable system performance enhancements and reduced render cycles for home or professional video production. Customers using servers and workstations based on AMD Opteron processors can optimize 32-bit software performance today, and scale to the full power of a 64-bit computing environment running 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Server operating systems when they become available.
“Through the performance, scalability and compatibility of our new AMD Opteron processors, Landmark Theatres movie goers can soon experience pure digital theater leveraging AMD64 technology including digital content creation, rendering and viewing,” said Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of AMD’s Microprocessor Business Unit. “The most demanding special effects and production companies already rely on the performance and stability of AMD processors to produce digital content and cinema. Now, through AMD Opteron processor-powered DCS systems, the quality and clarity of digital video will be unbelievable.”
“The relationship that AMD and DCS have established enables a powerful and scalable solution for the exhibition of Windows Media 9 Series content in Landmark Theatres.” said Jonathan Usher, Director, Windows Digital Media Division, Microsoft Corporation.
“AMD’s understanding of how important independent filmmakers are in moving digital technology forward and their commitment to this community is matched only by the performance and scalability of the new 64-bit AMD Opteron processor. We are thrilled to have them on our team,” said Jim Steele, president of Digital Cinema Solutions.
AMD introduced its 32- and 64-bit compatible AMD Opteron processors for servers and workstations on April 22, 2003.
About the AMD Opteron Processor The AMD Opteron processor is based on AMD’s eighth-generation processor core, and marks the introduction of the industry’s first 64-bit, x86 technology implementation. This technology is designed to preserve companies’ investments in 32-bit applications, while allowing a seamless transition to 64-bit computing, as those companies require. The AMD Opteron processor is designed to deliver high-performance server and workstation solutions for today’s most demanding enterprise applications. The processor is designed to be scalable, reliable and compatible, which can result in lower total cost of ownership. Key AMD Opteron processor innovations include an integrated memory controller, which reduces memory bottlenecks, and HyperTransport technology, which increases overall performance by removing or reducing I/O bottlenecks, increasing bandwidth and reducing latency.
