Nokia THR880 hand-portable and Nokia TMR880 mobile terminals for public safety personnel G
Nokia announced it will provide Nokia THR880 hand-portable and Nokia TMR880 mobile terminals for public safety personnel in Greece. More than 20,000 public safety users in Greece will be equipped with Nokia terminals, including the police, fire brigades, military and other security personnel.
Alpha Copy SA, the Nokia Mobile Phones distributor and Greece's leading mobile phone and digital home office supplier, will supply the terminals and related solutions to the user organisations. All terminals will be in operational use before the start of the Olympic Games in 2004.
Communication and co-operation between different authorities must be smooth and they need highly sophisticated features in their radios. Nokia's TETRA radios will help to ensure the day-to-day security and safety of hundreds of thousands of visitors, reporters, athletes and spectators during the Olympic Games. The advanced features of TETRA technology, such as instant group calls, intelligent management of groups and pre-emptive emergency calls, help to improve the safety of public safety officers.

The Nokia THR880 and Nokia TMR880 radios will provide secure communications in the most critical situations," says Kenneth Björklund, Director, TETRA Terminals, Nokia. "The Greek market will also have the benefit of new features in Nokia terminals - for example, the user interface and voice feedback are available in Greek."
Terminals were chosen on the basis of the functionalities they provide and for their reliability. Particularly important is the familiar and easy to use interface, which makes introduction and training for TETRA terminal users straightforward and efficient. Both Nokia terminals also have the same user interface, which further simplifies use and improves reliability. Advanced security and data features, such as class 2 and class 3 encryption, WAP and packet data enable a wide variety of applications to be exploited.
The Nokia THR880 is the first TETRA product with a high-resolution colour display featuring clear symbols, making it easier to read and access information. The voice feedback feature guides users and confirms their selections, freeing hands and eyes to focus on the task at hand. The unique two-sided design of the Nokia THR880 allows flexible operation. On one side is a TETRA phone for phone calls, messaging and menu access, while the other side is a radio, optimized for group communication The shock, dust and water resistant Nokia THR880 is constructed from rigid materials and fitted with bumpers and protective covers for use in harsh conditions. TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is the only open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to meet the needs of the most demanding professional mobile radio users.
