CD near end? CD Sales keep dropping, DVD getting stronger
Is the CD at the end of it's life? That’s a question that many music industry analysts, musicians and people working with music are asking themselves, and not without reason. More and more people are downloading or copying music instead of buying CDs. Last year the CD was already showing weak sales.
Sales 2002 (Source: IFPI)
CD albums - down 6% Singles - down 16% Cassettes - down 36% VHS - down 42% DVD - up 58%
The only rising format was the DVD. And this year is no different. Although the year is not yet over, this year the DVD will also be the big winner. So what does this mean, can we throw away our CD player? Probably, most DVD player can play standard CDs, MP3 CDs and audio DVD’s.
Many artists and musicians are also starting to take notice. Why release a CD? DVD’s offer much more, more content, video and they are not as easy to copy. The first major artists and record companies are already experimenting with releasing DVD’s only of new albums.
Just a few years and you can ask yourself what was the last CD I bought?
