| New panasonic mini systems feature refreshed design, bigger, brighter displays and dynamicNew for the 2001 Panasonic mini system line are five, five-disc CD changer models that feature a refreshed design that incorporates a larger, more-brightly-lit, display, slimmer cabinets and repositioned controls making these systems more user-friendly.Models SC-AK22, SC-AK33, SC-AK44, SC-AK66 and SC-AK77 have the potential to change the way consumers think of mini systems. Not only are these systems perfect for small spaces, such as bedrooms and offices, or as a second system in the home, they are cut out for full-time duty as the primary source for home entertainment. Their sound will fill any large living area, and their appearance will be a welcome addition to any modern decor. This year's models feature even slimmer cabinets than previous years -with each speaker measuring a mere 8-9/32-inches wide and the center unit measuring 9-11/16-inches in width- these models have the potential of bringing big sound to even smaller spaces. Featuring MASH*-equipped, five-disc changers, all of the mini systems can deliver hours of uninterrupted music, marked by all the subtleties and nuances for which Panasonic's 1-bit DAC is known. For customized playback according to personal taste or the music being played, a 3-D Space EQ is provided on all of these systems, giving users a choice of six preset equalizer settings (Disco, Hall, Live, Heavy Clear, Soft). Also included is the Super Sound EQ function which enhances the low, medium and high frequencies at the touch of a button. Each mini system also has dual auto-reverse cassette decks with feather-touch control, as well as digital tuners with 24-station (12 AM, 12 FM) presets, and five direct, one-touch open/direct play keys for random loading and play of any disc currently in the system. Other features common among all five models include Tape Program Search for quick tape track access; programmable timer with sleep mode; and wireless remote controls. Though these systems are built for quality sound, they're nice to look at too. New for this year are bigger and brighter displays that have been moved to the top of the system for easily monitoring functions at eye level. The CD drawer has been repositioned and now sits at the bottom of the unit, ruling out the chance of it blocking the display when it is in the "open" position. Additionally, jog dials simplify many functions, while removable speaker grilles let owners change the look of the unit for a different visual effect. All models are also Energy Star compliant, and in Eco mode draw approximately 0.29W of power in standby. SC-AK22 and SC-AK33 These systems represent a remarkable value. Model SC-AK22 delivers 140W of total stereo power (10%, 1kHz, Total), while the SC-AK33 pushes out almost twice that figure, delivering a total of 260W (10%, 1kHz, Total). The SC-AK22 has two-way speakers and the SC-AK33 has three-way speakers. Additionally, the SC-AK33 is a bi-amp, bi-wired system and features enhanced, 6-3/4" Super Woofers in separate speaker enclosures. Result: listeners will be treated to exceptional bass response with well-centered vocals and crisp highs. Both models feature Double Space Spectrum Analyzer displays, which indicate musical power in a visually interesting way. SC-AK44 Kicking it up a notch, the SC-AK44 is highlighted by 300 watts total stereo power (10%, 1kHz, Total). This model adds polypropylene mica cones for clear sound reproduction of the midrange, and features a bi-amp, bi-wiring Super Woofer and three-way speakers. It also boasts a large colorful FL display, which is about 3" x 2" in size. SC-AK66 and SC-AK77 Two new models raise the bar on the entertainment scale by delivering Dolby Pro Logic surround sound, and come with center and surround speakers for home theater enjoyment. Model SC-AK77, a bi-amp, bi-wire, three-way speaker system, pumps out 370W total AV power, while the two-way speaker SC-AK66 delivers 280W total AV power. The SC-AK77 also features six-channel discrete inputs, so a Dolby Digital® or DTS™-equipped DVD player or external decoder can be added. Users can even take advantage of multi-channel DSP effects, useful when viewing non-surround material. Settings include Center Focus, Virtual Rear Surround, Multi-Rear Surround and a Seat Position mode. Polypropylene mica cones and separate Super Woofers are also included on this model. The SC-AK22 is available in solid black or silver with blue accents. The remaining models feature silver cabinets with gray accents.
