AKM single-chip 24-bit audio CODEC for AV amplifiers and DVD receiversAsahi Kasei Microsystems (AKM) introduced the AK4589, a single-chip 24-bit audio CODEC. It is an ideal single-chip solution for AV amplifiers and DVD receivers in multi-channel audio applications including Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, MPEG and AAC.The AK4589 chip features 2-channel A/D, 8-channel 114 dB differential output D/A compatible with 192 kHz sampling. Built-in digital volume control and 192 kHz-compatible 8-inputs/2-outputs DIR/DIT make it ideal for todayıs demanding audiophiles. As an upgraded version of the AK4588, the AK4589 delivers an 8dB improvement in performance. This has been achieved by reconfiguring each DAC analogue output from single-end to a low distortion differential output, achieving a DR, S/N of 114 dB. The AK4589 is software compatible with the AK4588 and, except for the analogue output pins, the pin assignments are also compatible. The CODEC and DIT/DIR sections of the AK4589 operate independently and support the latest DTS96/24 format. The DIR, which enables eight-channel input selection, can be interfaced with a variety of digital AV devices via functions that detect non-PCM data, such as Dolby Digital. The DACıs built-in channel-independent digital volumes allow multi-channel signal balancing. The AK4589ıs audio interface is also TDM-system compatible, which simplifies DSP interfacing. The advanced architecture with its low distortion and low-noise analogue output, makes it easy to upgrade from the AK4588 so a high-performance home theatre system can be achieved cost-effectively.
